You know, it’s not every day that you see a scary movie that literally makes your skin crawl, make you quiver in your chair, want to throw the “F”-bomb at every second, yet love every single twist at the same time.
Written and directed by Fede Alvarez comes Don’t Breathe, and the title explains itself. The story follows a group of friends who happen to be very experienced thieves at night. They’ve robbed almost every house in their neighborhood and now it’s time to move on to somewhere else. Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette) and Money (Daniel Zovatto) decide to rob The Blind Man (Stephen Lang) after they find out that he is hiding $300,000 dollars in his home due to a settlement after his daughter was run over and killed. The trio break into the house thinking they’ll get away with the perfect heist, and they’re very wrong. The Blind Man knows something is up and relying on his smell and hearing, he decides to hunt down the trio and will stop at nothing until he rids his house of the three. Things turn very deadly and horrifying for the three real quick, and they realize they made a grave mistake. To make things worse, The Blind Man is a war veteran, so he knows a thing or two about survival of the fittest and killing.
This movie is a new kind of horror movie. It’s not scary in the sense of ghosts and paranormal activity, it’s scary because it could happen to you. When you start watching the movie, you kind of feel a little bad for The Blind Man because he’s handicapped with his vision and them stealing his money, but as the movie progresses you soon feel very sorry for Rocky, Alex and Money. It’s so surreal to sit and watch them try to escape the house without being killed, because you think to yourself, what if that was me?
The writing and directing of this film was so fantastic that I was entranced from beginning to end. Nothing is predictable in this movie at all and sure, we’ve all seen movies with huge plot twists and OMG! Moments but this movie’s twist is so horrifying and disgusting, I kid you not, I almost had to leave the theatre because it was so bad. This movie is not for little kids or someone with a weak stomach and I strongly urge anyone under the age of 18 to advise caution because still to this day I am not ok with what I witnessed. The Blind Man is a disgusting human being and by the end of the movie, you’ll wish him dead and be rooting for Rocky, Alex and Money.
Will the trio be able to escape The Blind Man’s house and make away with the money, or are they more worried about staying alive and avoiding The Blind Man’s war-like tactics? Get to a theatre and see this movie because you’ll be glad you did. It is rated R for strong violence and pervasive language and trust me, you won’t be breathing by the end of this movie.
