Criminal assault reported near BOE

The Butler Lantern received report of an assault that took place inside the Grizzly Villa apartment complex during the wee hours of Saturday, Aug. 27.

According to multiple anonymous sources, the incident may have involved one or more Butler students.

Whether or not the assault was of a verbal, physical or sexual nature has thus far gone unconfirmed.

Given the lack of information currently available, the Butler Lantern has attempted to pursue all of the available mediums in order to bring this story to light for the safety and benefit of the student body.

As a result, on Tuesday, Sept. 6 the Butler Lantern submitted a request for information to the El Dorado Police Department regarding police reports and any available information on the nature of the assault. Such records, according to the Kansas Open Records Act (KORA), are open to public inquiry.

The efforts made by the Butler Lantern were of little avail.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 7, the El Dorado Police Department issued a written letter to the Butler Lantern which denied the submitted request for information.

It became clear that reporter driven research was necessary.

In searching through public police reports, access to which the Butler Lantern was denied by the El Dorado Police Department, the newspaper was able to deduce only the following information:

– The assault took place sometime before 2:10 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 27.

– The assault took happened on location at 700 S. Haverhill, which is the address of The Grizzly Villas.

All of the tenants living at the Grizzly Villas are Butler students.

No further information was gathered from the police report.
