The Lady Grizzlies of the women’s soccer team continues to dominate, winning their home opener against Cowley last Friday night, Sept. 16, 7-3. The ladies are ranked fourth and for a good reason. They’ve won their last six games and are 6-2 overall and undefeated in conference play.
Against Cowley the Grizzlies came out and set the pace, scoring four times in the first 30 minute alone, two by freshman Lauren Allen. Allen scored the first goal at the top of the fourth minute. Then, at minute 13, freshman Caro Limon scored off of an assist from sophomore Colleen Howland. Allen then scored her second goal, putting Butler up 3-0 with only 16 minutes of play on the clock.
Towards the end of the first half of play, Colleen Howland scored off an assist from Allen.
However, Cowley managed to break the shutout in the 48th minute with their first of three goals, making the game 4-1. Butler’s Colleen Howland would be quick to answer with her second goal of the night, making the game 5-1. The ladies would continue to trade goals, but it was Butler’s Michelle Palfrey who topped off the game, scoring with just four seconds left of play.
Overall, Butler has never been defeated by Cowley, winning all 11 meetings. Throughout the eight games played this season, the Grizzlies have allowed 14 goals so far.
In this particular game, Butler outshot Cowley 25-3 and had a 12-1 corner kick advantage.
The following Sunday, Sept. 18, Butler played and soundly defeated Navarro at home in a 4-1 victory. This marked their seventh straight win (7-2 overall) (3-0 conference). Scoring three times in the first half alone, the ladies established their dominance early, owning the pace of the game, making this dominating presence known sophomore Lexi Clark scored in the first minute of play.
Then a half hour into the game, Katie Hartman scored again, slipping a goal into the right side of the keeper. Finally, with two minutes to go, Michelle Palfrey topped off the half with a goal scored with a high leg kick right over the keeper, making the game 3-0.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Navarro scored their first of the game, only to be answered 22 seconds later by Butler’s Colleen Howland off an assist from Ky Kreemer, making the game 4-1. During the game, sophomore goalkeeper Jami Reichenberger had 14 saves out of 15 shots during the Grizzlies seventh straight win of the season. This performance earned Reichenberger Player of the Week for the second week in a row along with teammate Colleen Howland.
