Kindness Column: Grizzly Ambassadors reach out, help community

Grizzly Ambassadors, a student organization with the mission of assisting community members around Butler, recently helped local dog rescue “Alex’s House” host its “Bark in the Park” event on Saturday, Nov. 5.

The organization, led by President Hannah Bargas and adviser Andrea Miller, has the goal of helping all they can throughout the community and enjoyed kicking off their work this year with Alex’s House.

“We have held Bark in the Park, where we volunteered to help Alex’s House, an organization that adopts animals that were supposed to be euthanized and now have a second chance at a home,” Bargas said. “Alex’s House was having an auction event to raise money for the organization just this past Saturday.”

Bargas, who was appointed president of the organization this summer, has always had a knack for helping others.

“I joined Grizzly Ambassadors because I’ve always had a huge heart for those in need,” Bargas said. “I did an event for the homeless shelter for my senior project in high school where I had participants sleep in boxes, rather than their normal bed. I shadowed a homeless shelter and really felt like I had a lot to offer the community.”

Grizzly Ambassadors (GA) is working to make a steep difference around Butler.

“I really encourage change, especially with the world we live in right now,” Bargas said. “I think so many people in the United States need help right now, so what I want for GA is to make some sort of difference in our small town USA of El Dorado.”

Bargas encourages students to get involved with the organization for its upcoming “Give-Back Day,” the group’s largest event. With a goal set for the turnout of around 100 students, GA is hoping to fulfill many community needs with its Give-Back.

“We have people sign up online, and we assign people to places to work,” Bargas said. “I’m hoping for a really big turnout. It really helps that Andrea Miller is so good with students, and Bryan Miller encourages his athletes to help out. This year, I really want to spread the word out.”

Joining GA not only helps students build their resumes, but giving back to the community helps everyone involved—including the students.

“Definitely join,” Bargas said. “Not only does it look good on a resume, but it makes you feel good. Don’t do it for that sole purpose, but knowing that you changed someone’s life in a good way is something that everyone should take part in.”

Although Bargas encourages students to get involved with GA and volunteering, she believes that even a short amount of work can have a big impact.

“Even if it’s just for 30 minutes, that’s 30 minutes you helped somebody,” Bargas said.
