Kindness Column: Why not volunteer?

Author’s Note: Although the Kindness Column is normally written in order to highlight the good works of organizations in and around the area, I would like to make a slight change for the final issue of the column. I encourage readers, however many there may be, to become the workers you’ve been reading about. This is the season of giving. So, give your time or your money. Give your efforts and give your love to those around you.

This time of year, shoppers are pleased to buy gifts for their loved ones. In fact, people are pleased just as much to receive these gifts which they are lucky to be given. This time of year is the stuff of Hallmark movies. Cheer wafts in the air for those fortunate enough to have warm beds in warm homes, as well as families, fellowship and presents to look forward to. Unfortunately, very many people are not so privileged. In fact, many individuals in Wichita and even El Dorado are faced with challenges of hunger and homelessness.

Rather than simply ignoring the bell of the Salvation Army’s Santa Claus outside the grocery store and instead of tossing in a few cents or a few dollars, individuals looking for volunteering opportunities this season can head up to the local Salvation Army itself and get directly involved with community efforts. The group can be found at stores in most areas also sponsors Angel Trees that allow shoppers to buy gifts and necessities for low-income families and children. These trees can be found at stores in most areas. El Dorado’s Salvation Army can be reached at 316-321-4070 or at its regional website, salarmymokan.org.

Volunteering during cold weather months can be especially beneficial for individuals facing housing crises. One local organization, the Butler Homeless Initiative, provides shelter to those in need as well as Blessing Bags and other services to help provide for other necessities. The organization’s executive director, Danica Murray, can be reached for details on donations and volunteering opportunities at 316-323-4122.

Miles outside of El Dorado lies Wichita, where the homeless population is prominent. Many organizations, like United Way and the Lord’s Diner work year-round to provide for these demographics. Each of these unique services enables volunteers to help fight hunger and other issues faced by individuals who are less fortunate. The Lord’s Diner accepts donations and volunteers and can be reached at info@thelordsdiner.org or 316-265-6646.

The United Way can be reached with general inquiries at uwp@unitedwayplains.org and donations can be made on their website.
Inter-Faith Ministries offers one unique program during the cheerful season. Operation Holiday provides many services to families in need. With its distribution of foodstuff for humans and pets alike as well as warm clothing for winter weather, low-income families benefit greatly from the organization. Additionally, the group’s partnership with national charity Toys for Tots so that children 14 and under will have gifts waiting for them. Donations and volunteering/sponsorship information can be found at interfaithwichita.org.

This is the season of giving. When money is tight, donating time and service is always a wonderful option.
