Being a student at Butler can sometimes be rather boring. However, for one student this will never be the case. Jordan Fox might be, dare I say it, the most interesting person on campus. Is he one of our many theater students? No. Is he the star athlete on one of our many sports programs? No. Is he a singer in our wide variety of musical programs? Well yes, but that is not entirely what makes him interesting. No, over the last year Fox has been working on his debut rap album “Calm and Sense”.
“I’ve been super interested in hip hop since about eighth grade,” Fox said, when asked what drove him to begin song writing.
Fox’s album is to be slated with seven songs not including an intro and an outro. All of the songs besides the outro are titled. Titles for some of the songs include “Snakes,” “Keep Going,” “Potion” and “Center of Attention.”
“It’s between Snakes and Potion… partially because I love the sound on them,” Fox said, when asked about what song he most excited about.
The beat is all important to the success of a song. Most artists are influenced by creators before them, and nothing changes with Fox. Fox said that his beat choice was highly influenced by the rapper King Iso. His writing style has several influencers with the main two being the Kansas City product Tech N9ne and the newer rapper Schoolboy Q. Tech N9ne has been Fox’s favorite rapper for a long time, and he loved his writing style.
According to Fox, Schoolboy Q has been his rapper of choice recently and has influenced some of his writing style. However, Fox does say that when listening to his songs, you can hardly hear any of Schoolboy Q’s influence.
“It’s very introspective and grity,” Fox said, when asked what he most wanted people to know about the upcoming album.
Fox, originally from Arkansas City, has performed live before in a hometown bar. He has also toured his way to the neighboring Winfield to perform at a place known just as “The Bar.”
Recording sessions has been the biggest struggle for Fox, as he must travel to Ponca City, Okla., to record with a friend of his known as DJ Swirl. Fox travels the 87 miles twice a month. While it may be an expensive project, it is one that Fox is willing to see through. With his album slated to come out in late February, his dream is almost certain to come true.
You can find Fox’s album by searching his name “Jordan Fox,” and his debut album “Calm and Sense” will be available on Bandcamp with possible additions to Spotify and ITunes coming later on.
