Many times, students are faced with a class that they may struggle to understand. Whether it be a science, math or English class, there is a place on the Butler campuses where students can get the help they may need.

Butler offers a Tutoring Center free to students for those who may need assistance with a class.

There is no need to schedule an appointment for tutoring, as it works as an open-entry Tutoring Center, according to Academic Success Coach/Tutoring Coordinator Crystal Aluko. It is based on a first come, first serve system.

All a student needs to bring is his or her student ID, textbooks and any course material that he or she may have as these all help the tutors aid the students. The student tutors find it can be a rewarding job on campus.

“My favorite thing working as a tutor is none other than seeing that happy face of the student who finally understood what the context is about,” sophomore tutor Cheng Min Lian said. “Each successful student is my motivation to try my best to help them out.”

There is tutoring available on both the Andover and El Dorado campuses along with in the A&P labs located on both campuses. On the Andover campus, the Tutoring Lab can be found in the 5000 building in room 5202U and on the El Dorado campus in the 200 building in room 205.

There are 12 tutors total in between the El Dorado and Andover campuses along with the A&P Labs.

“These tutors are basically your peers, but they have excelled in the subject areas in which they tutor in,” Aluko said.

The tutors help students in a variety of ways.

“My job as a tutor ambassador is to be able to help other students to excel in subjects that they may have struggles with,” sophomore tutor ambassador Hailey Browning said. “I am there to help them understand certain concepts that they may be confused about.”

An additional service provided is academic coaching offered by Aluko. Aluko will work one-on-one with a student to help him or her improve a certain academic skill. These skills can be note taking, test taking or applying reading strategy to an assigned reading.
The tutoring center is open to all students, and Aluko urges any student interested to step in and check it out.

“Most of all, it is a place that students can go to to study,” Aluko said. “It is a place they can go to to connect with other students and network, make friendships and engage in interesting discussion.”

Students can come to the Tutoring Lab even if they do not need tutoring. It is a study area equipped with computers where students can feel free to hold study groups or simply just study on their own.
