Continuing the winning trend

On Saturday, Jan. 28, and on Friday, Feb. 3, Butler’s men’s and women’s track team kept the winning trend going.

At the Pitt State Invitational, Butler ran into some tough competition. Many Division 2 and other junior colleges came to compete. For the men, Andre Ewers finished third in the 60-meter final with the time of 6.71 seconds. Ewers also had the second fastest 200-meter time, running the race in 21.32 seconds. Quintavon Poole ran the fastest 400-meter time at 46.66 seconds. Butler’s 4×400-meter relay of Akeem Sirleaf, Jamoul Pierre, James Hambrick and Quintaveon Poole placed third with a time of 3:14 seconds. In the field, Tyson Penn placed third, jumping 2.10 (6 feet, 8 inches). For the women, Valeriya Kostiuk took first place in the high jump, jumping 5 feet, 8 inches.
The men put on a great performance in Wichita, winning the meet with a score of 119. On the track, the men dominated the competition, finishing with six first place competitors.
In the men’s 60-meter dash, freshman Travis Collins won the event with a time of 6.84 seconds. Kyandre Lyons won the 200-meter dash with the time 22.30 seconds.

The men took the top 2 spots in the 400-meter dash as Akeem Sirleaf won the event with the time 49.93 seconds, followed by Traion Poellnitz with a 52.18 time.

The Butler 4×800-meter relay claimed first place with a time of 8:24.38 seconds. For the field events, the men finished with three first place winners.

Landon Cuskelly won the high jump with a jump of 2.10 meters (6 feet, 8 inches). Elijah Smith jumped 6.81 meters (22 feet, 3 inches) to win the long jump. Smith also won the triple jump, jumping 14.89 meters (48 feet, 8 inches). The women won the meet by a large margin finishing with a whopping 122 points.

On the track, the women had five first place winners on the night. Javonda Peagler won the 60-meter dash, running a time of 7.79 seconds.

Tashoy Blake won the 200-meter’s just beating out teammate Angel Malone with a time of 26.73 seconds. Davia Smith narrowly pulled out the race for first as she won the 400-meter dash, running a 59.14 second race. Courtney Willis won the 600-meter run with the time of 1:45.96 seconds.

For the field events, the women placed first in four events. Valeriya Kostiuk won the high jump, jumping 1.73 meters (5 feet, 6 inches). Jayne Roberts won the pole vault throwing 3.20 meters (10 feet, 5 inches).

Angel Malone won the long jump with the winning jump coming in at 5.46 meters (17 feet, 9 inches). Dejah Erskine threw 12.27 meters (40 feet, 2 inches) to win the shot put.
The Grizzlies’ next meet was hosted at Pittsburg State for the Gorilla Challenge on Friday, Feb. 10.
