At the end of the 2016 fall semester, the Director of Residence Life position opened up. On Monday, Dec. 12, Andrea Miller started her first day working as the Interim Director of Residence Life.

The Director of Residence Life has a variety of jobs, according to Miller. These jobs include placing incoming students into on campus living, making sure students are attending classes and that the students are behaving. Miller said one of the main goals is ensuring students are enjoying living on campus.

“That’s our goal in residence life,” Miller said. “We want students to have an exciting and educational college experience living on campus.”

While balancing the position of interim director of residence life, Miller also works as the coordinator of Student Development. Balancing the workload of these two can be challenging, but Miller remains positive about it.

“I am always ready for a challenge!” Miller said. “It is a challenging task, but it definitely helps when you make the choice to have a positive outlook on each situation.”

Miller is not the only person ensuring that all of the necessary tasks are completed in Residence Life. She explained that Assistant Football Coach Zach Rampy, who is the manager of the West Dorms, has helped a great deal with this position. The four other hall professionals, who are also coaches, have also been very helpful.

There are also a variety of students who help in the Residence Life. There are 23 resident assistants who ensure that the residents are following the rules of residence life along with a variety of other tasks.

“Being an RA is a tough but rewarding job,” sophomore RA Stacy Tuxhorn said. “ We are there for our residents when they need us. Our job as an RA is to help get the students who live on campus involved and get them out of their rooms. Many times newer students need people their own age to talk to. We as RAs are there for them by listening and being a friend they can laugh and joke with, but also be serious too!”

There are two student workers who work in the easy lobby office: Morgan Friesen and Madisyn Coats. Miller explained how the hard work that all of these people put in makes her job easier to accomplish.

“When you have awesome people to work with, it makes this job that much better,” Miller said.

There is a plan to hire someone to take over the position of director of Residence Life. However, there is no information yet on the hiring committee or the hiring date, according to Miller.
