The Grizzly’s women’s basketball team only scored 43 points, but sneaked out of Iola with a victory on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Butler beat Allen County 43-33 in an impeccable defensive effort.
Butler trailed early on but fought back. Butler fell 9-8 but the Grizzlies scored five straight to end the first quarter, going up 13-9 after one quarter.
The Grizzlies have won four in a row, jumping out to 16-5 on the season and 13-5 in the Jayhawk. Butler has won seven of their last eight games.
Both teams shot the ball under 30 percent, with Butler holding Allen County to only 25.5 percent for the contest.
Raegan Sanchez scored four straight for the Grizzlies and extends the lead to seven at 21-14 with 4:18 to go in the first half in Iola.
The Grizzlies led 22-16 at halftime.
Butler took their first double-digit lead shortly out of halftime, going up 26-16 with 7:39 left in the third quarter.
Butler’s defense was yet again outstanding, grabbing 43 rebounds and forcing a season high 29 turnovers.
Washington hit a running shot, putting Butler up 35-26 with 5:31 left in the game. She had nine points in the second half.
Every time the Lady Red Devils made a march back into the game, the Grizzlies found a way to shut them down.
Sophomore Kendriana Washington scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Butler.
Butler continues their dominance over Allen County as they haven’t lost to Allen since 2007.
