Baseball splits games with Coffeyville at home

The Butler Grizzlies baseball team fell to Coffeyville in a low-scoring game. Both teams were strong on the mound on Sunday, Feb. 12, but Coffeyville was just a little bit stronger at the plate in a victory over Butler.

Corey Murphy started the game for the Butler Grizzlies and recorded 15 outs. Sam Carver earned the win for Coffeyville. Two relievers helped Coffeyville close out the victory. Walker Secrist recorded the last out to earn the save for Coffeyville. Murphy took the loss for the Butler Grizzlies. He pitched five innings, surrendering two runs, five hits and striking out one.

Javis Larson led Butler Grizzlies with one run batted in. He went 0-for-3 on the day. Coffeyville had five hits in the game. Carson Pickard and Braden Kirkpatrick each collected multiple hits for Coffeyville

Later that day in game two, Butler jumped out to an early lead in victory over Coffeyville. The Grizzlies defeated Coffeyville 9-5 thanks to a strong start. The Grizzlies scored on a walk by Larson, a walk by Connor Hurst, a single by Tanner White, a walk by Trent Smith, and a single by Garrett Xanders in the second inning. Coffeyville scored four runs in the sixth inning, but the Grizzlies still managed to pull out the victory. The big inning for Coffeyville came thanks to a error, a double by Bret Mitchell and a error. Blake Mullendore earned the win for Butler Grizzlies. He went five innings, allowing zero runs and four hits.

Caleb Nunez threw one inning, as three relievers helped Butler Grizzlies finish off the victory. Nunez recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Grizzlies.

Gavin Heltemes took the loss for Coffeyville. He pitched one and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs, two hits, and striking out three. Xanders, White, Garrett Chalker, and Larson each collected one hit to take the lead early.

Coffeyville collected nine hits. Kyler Cook, Jose Carrasquillo, and Braden Kirkpatrick each collected multiple hits for Coffeyville. Coffeyville did not commit a single error in the field. Bret Mitchell had six chances in the field, the most on the team.
