Butler’s women’s and men’s basketball teams were both victorious on Monday, Feb. 27, on their last regular season games of the season. It was sophomore night at the Power Plant, as the teams matched up against Colby Community College.
The women went up against a struggling Colby women’s team, as their overall record has dropped to 3-27 with the loss to Butler last night. The final score was 83-37, as the Grizzlies offense and defense were clicking on all cylinders. It was an overall great team effort, as Kendriana Washington led the way with 18 points, and Raven Prince followed up with 17 points, along with 12 rebounds. Butler scored first and never trailed for the rest of the game, as Colby really struggled right out of the gate and could never really get it together. The Grizzlies had a lead over 30 before the second half as well, as they gained all of the momentum and cruised to the win.
The men were playing a very defense-first Colby team, as out of the gate, Butler’s offense had struggled to gain points, but all of a sudden, they figured it out and caught fire. They ended up knocking down 44 points in the first half, compared to Colby’s 29. Ketarrious Bouchum led the way in the first half with 11 points. In the second half, Colby started to make things interesting, as they trimmed the Grizzly lead to 12, but Butler had other plans. Semaj Hervey and Johnnathan Lindsey started to step up in the second half, as Bouchum continued his strong game as well, and Butler was able to pull far ahead of Colby, ultimately leading to a 92-74 victory.
In both the women’s and men’s games, the sophomores were honored at the Power Plant in the last regular season game. All of them received their own personal plaques, along with little gifts as well.
Assistant Coach Brandon Lewis was pleased with the way the Grizzlies played in the game.
“When we went through the six game losing streak, we still wouldn’t back down. Our guys would still show up to practice and do what they were so supposed to do,” Lewis said.
Also after the win, the Butler Grizzlies secured a No. 5 seed in the upcoming tournament.
“It’s cool that we are a five seed, but we just got to keep winning,” Lewis said.
