Grizzlies sprint toward end of season

The Butler Grizzlies men’s and women’s track team looked to improve on an already successful season at the Tiger Invite at Cowley Community College on Saturday, April 1, a home meet competing in the Everett Kohl Grizzly Classic on Saturday, April 8, and the Wichita State KT Woodman Classic on Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15.

The Tiger Invite resulted in a lot of victories for the Grizzlies and an overall dominating performance.

The women started things off on a good note ending with seven first place finishes. On the track, the Grizzlies took first, second and third in the 5000-meter run with Irine Jepkemboi taking the top spot. In the Steeplechase, Janie Salinas took the top spot. Javonda Peagler, Alexxis Milner, Tashoy Blake and Kylia Smith won the 4×100-meter relay in 47.67 seconds. In the field events, Valeriya Kostiuk won the high jump jumping 5 feet, 4 inches. Kylia Smith won the long jump. In the women’s Hammer, Peyton Brower came out on top. Brower also won the Javelin, winning the event throwing 87 feet, 11 inches.

For the men, they took home 12 first place finishes. Starting on the track, Andre Ewers won the 100-meter dash with a blazing time of 10.25 seconds. Akeem Sirleaf took the top spot in the 200-meter dash. In the 400-meter dash, sophomore Jamoul Pierre won the event. Boniface Kiptoo continued his success, winning the 800-meter run. Freshman Eliud Koech finished on top, winning the 5000-meter run. Kurth Collins leaped to a victory winning the 400-meter hurdles. Sophomore Emmanuel Biwott took first in the Steeplechase. Kyandre Lyons, Travis Collins, Akeem Sirleaf and Andre Ewers came together to take the top spot in the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 40.31 seconds. In the field events, Tyson Penn had a great day winning the high jump, long jump and the triple jump. Kendal McGuire rounded out the men’s successes with a first place finish in the men’s javelin.

The men’s and women’s track team enjoyed their weekend at home running at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.

The men had a good showing at the meet taking the top spot in 7 events. Andre Ewers won the 200-meter dash. Jhibri Greer got the come from behind victory in the 110 hurdles. The 4×100 relay team that consists of Kyandre Lyons, Travis Collins, Akeem Sirleaf and Andre Ewers came out in first with a time of 40.73 seconds. Tyson Penn won the high jump for the second week in a row jumping 6 feet, 9 inches. The Grizzlies took the top four spots in the long jump, but it was James Hambrick who won the event. Elijah Smith won the triple jump. Kendal McGuire continued his winning ways as he took the top spot in the men’s javelin.

For the women, they ended the meet with four first place places. Alexxis Milner got the ball rolling winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.75 seconds. Irine Jepkemboi won first place in the 10000 meter run. 4×100 meter relay team of Javonda Peagler, Alexxis Milner, Tashoy Blake and Kylia Smith won pretty handled with a time of 47.66 seconds. For field events, Valeriya Kostiuk won the high jump jumping 5 feet, 6 inches.

The Grizzlies men and women ran into some tough completion at the Wichita State KT Woodman Classic. The men finished in 16th place, while the women finished in 13th.
The track teams will be in action again on Saturday, April 21, for the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla.
