While you were away for the summer, the Butler Grizzlies’ softball team won their second National Championship in two years, beating Salt Lake (UT) in the National Championship Game.
Brynn Minor, University of Kansas signee, hit three home runs with seven RBIs. Becca Schulte, who is now at LSU, was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player. She hit 10 RBIs with four home runs. Regan Mergele, who signed with Nebraska, was named Most Outstanding Pitcher.
The Grizzlies won the 2016 NJCAA National Championship and rolled off 88 consecutive wins, including come from behind wins in early season tournaments in Texas. Galveston State led Butler until scored in the bottom of the ninth.
The 88-game winning streak is the largest in all levels of collegiate softball.
Butler beat Trinidad State (Colo.) in the first round. Then, the Grizzlies knocked off Snead State (Al.) and Central Arizona to get into the semi-finals. Butler then beat Salt Lake in back-to-back games to win the National Championship.
Five players moved on to major Division I programs such as Texas, and Louisville among others.
Butler had the longest winning streak in collegiate softball, at any level, snapped at 88 games in the Region VI tournament in May.
The fall season begins on Saturday, Sept. 23 in Omaha, Nebraska against Creighton.
