“This Week in El Dorado”: Disc Golf

El Dorado Mayor Vince Haines cut the ribbon with a few words to commemorate the opening of the El Dorado Legions Park Disc Golf Course to the public. This course has 18 holes with concerted baskets and walking tails going throughout the area. The course is located by B.G. Products Veterans Sports Complex. Some people who have already tried this course said this is one of the hardest in the state of Kansas. Would you try it out?

While I walked throughout the course, I saw different signs with numbers leading up to the 18th hole. The instructions indicate where the disc is thrown at and which basket to make it in to. They are two different distances in disc golf; one is a short distance along with the other is a longer distance. The grass is taller in places, but there is one area around the walkway that was mowed down and left on the sidewalk. But as I continued on my walk on the way around the course, I came upon a little creek that flowed through some rocks. As I walked towards the back of the course, off to the side there were two blue Port-o-Potties. Throughout the course, the first bench I saw had a nice emblem on it, but as I passed by another bench, there is a trash can next to a bench, that had some giraffe, all over it. As I finished my walk through of the park, I was pleased on how the course looks.

When trying to finding the perfect disc, make sure the disc is light and will fly straight. Having a good glide will help the accuracy. Keeping the disc flat will help with the long-distance throws and will help the disc fly further. Finding the perfect throwing style will be up to what you are comfortable with. Methods of throwing entail: “Reach Back,” “ License to Drive,” “Bent Elbow” and “Distance Secrete.”

Grip the disc with four fingers under the disc, but not too tightly with your thumb as close to the edge as possible. Balance is key. Make sure to follow through with the throw, make sure it is clean to avoid injury.
