Walking into the 700 building, the sight of glass doors being propped open and art being displayed on walls and tables come into sight. The gallery is dedicated to Erman B. White by Helen White and Tom White. For the past 25 years, the gallery has been opened to the public to exhibit multiple pieces of art done by artists.

The Art Department Director Valerie Haring and Co-Director Trisha Coates work together to arrange at least six to seven shows per school year. Both Haring and Coates select artists to exhibit their art in the gallery. Most of the time with Butler’s high reputation in the art community, artists approach Haring and Coates about being interested in exhibiting their work.

The art show now features the exhibit, “Teaching and Making: Northeast Magnet Art Faculty.” The art will be available in the gallery until Saturday, Sept. 30. “Teaching and Making” features four artists, Jennifer Larsen, Jenny Long, Meredith Radke-Gannon and Bruce Van Osdel.

“This was an exciting exhibit for us because it showcases the faculty from a school who sends us numerous students each year,” Coates said.

There are several different types of art; for instance, one artist encourages viewers to interact and touch the art. Each piece of art is on sale.

While the gallery is open, the art professors take their students down to the gallery and use it as a learning tool.

“The gallery is a unique learning lab for students to view and learn about different types of artwork,” Haring said.

The students on books-and-tuition scholarships for art are required to attend to the show and help put art up and take it down.

Every show has an open reception to introduce the art. Around 100 guests attend each reception, and when the show is student based, approximately 300 guests show. The gallery is open to the public every Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. While the gallery is open, a gallery attendant is present to answer any questions, make sure the art is not broken and enhance the viewer’s experience.

Save the date: Friday, Oct. 6 through Friday, Nov. 3, the next show will take place. The open reception is scheduled on Friday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m to 8 p.m.
