Winter has come, and it rides on a dragon spitting blue flames. Season 7 of HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones has recently concluded, and it might possibly be the most outstanding to date. While it did have plenty of immense plot twists, wonderful dialogue and plenty of battles, it also had its short comings.

Season 6 of Game of Thrones left us a huge cliffhanger, Daenerys had finally landed in Westeros with her hoard of Dothraki, her army of Unsullied, a fleet from Mereen and three giant dragons. Things couldn’t have gotten any better, then a year later season 7 opened with Arya Stark single-handedly destroying house Frey and avenging her brother Robb who was killed at the Twins during the Red Wedding. Another amazing scene was the destruction of the house Tarly who wouldn’t bend the knee to Daenerys Targaryen and were burnt alive by dragon fire. This was the first major battle we’ve seen since the Battle of the Bastards. It was also the first time we truly saw the Dothraki in battle.

The most outstanding aspects of the show is the writing. One very popular thing when talking about Game of Thrones is fan theories. Everybody loves to speculate what the show writers mean and what they are going for. However, the writers almost always blow the audience away with the unexpected. In one of the biggest scenes of the series, Sansa and Arya kill Peytr Baelish, nicknamed Little Finger, but what shocks everybody is that it seemed like Little Finger had turned the Stark sisters on each other. It’s the masterful writing and depth of character that drives the show.

The worse part of this show is the pacing. While it is understandable that corners need to be cut in order to tie up story arcs, some scenes were outright disappointing. When Jon’s party is stranded on the lake of ice, he is saved by Daenerys and her dragons upon hearing from a raven traveling over a thousand miles to her location. She then flies back another thousand miles on her dragons and save the group within half a day. Another complaint fans had was the sudden mustering force of the Lannister troops to sack Highgarden. With no money and no allies, it would have been impossible for the Lannisters to have that kind of power. Not only that, but the Tyrel army was massive when they supported Renly Baratheon making up the bulk of his force of over 100,000 men.

Despite the minor grips, Game of Thrones season 7 was nothing short of fantastic. The character development captivates us and keeps us at the edge of our seats hoping that our favorite characters don’t die, and the writing never ceases to shock us. All Thrones fans eagerly await the final season of the show, which is speculated to come out in 2018.
