Athletic Academic Services is looking for tutors to help student athletes. Athletic tutors do the same work as regular tutors, but it is slightly more structured. Tutors and athletes meet at a scheduled time each week to work on assignments and receive extra practice, allowing the students to build on each week. Students are paired with tutors that are better at the subjects they do not do as well in.

At the beginning of each school year, about six to eight tutors are needed; however, only two tutors are needed at the current moment.

Tutors generally work 15 hours each week. Depending on availability and the hours worked, athletic tutors are eligible for a books-and-tuition scholarship.

Each athletic tutor goes through an orientation and a training that is worked around their class schedule.

Freshman Laura Knight has been an athletic tutor for several weeks and has not had any previous experience in tutoring.

“It’s a really great learning experience,” Knight said.

To apply to become an athletic tutor, email Director of Athletic Academic Services Kylee Stuever, kstuever1@butlercc.edu. Stuever has a background in college athletics and has a graduate degree in student development. She has taught at several different schools and has even taught English overseas.

If an athlete wants to receive tutoring, they should also contact Stuever, and tutoring is required for those who are not doing well in classes. Tutoring is standard among many freshmen athletes. She says her experience helps her relate to a variety of students.

“There is a lot of value in what can happen here,” Steuver said. “(There are) lots of opportunities and room for growth.”
