Kingsman: The Secret Service, the predecessor to Kingsman: The Golden Circle, has been and still is one of my favorite spy thriller movies of all time. Having the honor of being the first R-rated film that I ever saw in theaters, shout out to the staff who failed to card me at the time, Kingsman: The Secret Service left a lasting impression on me that would help me gauge what I looked for in the action/spy thriller.

Kingsman: The Secret Service brings to life what can be done in an action scene to make it more than just a shaky cam showing us bits and pieces of an actors, face digitally placed onto their stunt doubles body. With its long single tracking shots, Kingsman: The Secret Service brought us one of the best action scenes in recent history with the scene at the church.

So how does Kingsman: The Golden Circle stack up to its big brother. Well if you strolled down to Rotten Tomatoes right now, you wouldn’t see such a good sight for the movies future. Kingsman: The Golden Circle is sitting at a very unjustified 50 percent, with critics not pulling any punches from their reviews of the move. The attack the plot saying that its sloppiness can be nothing but the laziness of the Director Matthew Vaughn.

While there were some holes in the plot, it’s not as if the movie isn’t comprehendable. At a staggering, and more than likely uncut, two hours and 21 minutes the movie contains some self-indulged scenes where it was clear that Vaughn wanted to hold us in the moment of what was happening, so that we may better understand the significance of the situation. The return of the character Harry Hart (Colin Firth), mentor to Eggsy (Taron Egerton), seems just like a cheap cash grab, but the way he is brought back seems to fall in line with how the technology and money of the later introduced Statesmen excels compared to the newly departed Kingsman. Everything about how Merlin (Mark Strong) and Eggsy eventually found their cousin organization of the Statesmen stays true to how the characters would have actually dealt with a situation that plays out as sort of a cruel joke.

While there may not have been a fight scene as good as the church scene from the first, Kingsman: The Golden Circle holds onto what made the first one special. This is a movie that elaborates what we of the mainstream media consumers want. An action packed original movie that can make us laugh, and while I may dog on it for being too long of a movie, I will not dog on its ability to keep me either laughing or on the edge of my seat as our favorite team of super spies figure out how to save the world… Again.
8/10
