Shouting, yelling and cheering coming from the sea of purple and gold in the Butler stands. This is what one might hear and see while at a football game or at least, one might think. At Butler Community College, there are no cheers, besides from the cheerleaders and the shouting and yelling is at a minimum, only coming from some of the players’ parents.
One would think that since Butler has a good football program that students would go to their games and cheer them on, but no that does not happen. There might be a few students, and they might be cheering, but not in very big groups and not very loud.
If one was to compare the attendance of the number of high school students to Butler students attending football games, there would be a much higher percent of students attending high school games. In high school, it seems almost like a competition between schools to see who had the bigger, better student section; however, at Butler there is no student section.
None of the sports at Butler have student sections– it is not just football. Women’s soccer is another great team, and there is also a lack of student attendance at their games. There is even less people that attend the soccer games than there are at the football games. At the soccer games, the stands are nearly empty.
The volleyball games are no better. They are also doing well this year, with no losses at any home games. It does not seem to matter how good a team is, people just simply do not show up. One might think people do not show up to the games because we are a community college, but that is not the case. Ryed Creek, a freshman volleyball player at Neosho County Community College, said that there is always a student section at her games and that some people will even paint their bodies.
It is obviously not just a community college issue if Neosho County have fans going through the troubles to paint their bodies for a game. The issue is with Butler and their students.
Whether it is because people simply do not have time or they do not care, it does not matter. There are plenty of students that make the time to go, and it is not like Butler students are the only college students that have limited time.
A lot of students go home on the weekends, so they might not be able to make it to the Saturday night football games. Even if one does go home on the weekends that would leave them time to make it to a Wednesday night volleyball game or a Friday night soccer game, make the time and go support the Grizzly teams.
