Crunchy, yet soft crust, bright red sauce, and creamy cheese. Recently, Jacob’s Well, a restaurant at 139 Main Street in El Dorado, has started offering brick oven pizza.
Walking in from the back entrance, I noticed the oven- a small brick structure with an opening in which a wood fire could be seen.
Inside, the restaurant was not very busy-only a few students doing homework together and a few women chatting over coffee, but then again it was a Thursday evening. I grabbed a menu, seated myself and started looking for a pizza.
As a vegetarian, it was hard to find something that didn’t include meat. However, there was a create-your-own pizza and a “please don’t add this” option. This is also good for picky eaters, as the ingredients are creative and certainly not common in small towns.
I was served quickly, ordering a sweet tea and a variation of the Catania, a pizza usually made with Canadian bacon, diced pineapple, mozzarella and a homemade marinara sauce.
The pizza came quickly, despite the server saying it had to be remade. It was very visually pleasing. The cheese had the perfect stringiness, and the sauce was a vibrant red.
At first, it tasted like a normal pizza, but as I chewed, a slightly smoky flavor came through. If not paid attention to, it would not be noticed, but it added a certain element to the other ingredients. It made the cheese feel a bit softer, the pineapple a bit juicier.
Overall, the pizza wasn’t the best I have ever had, but it certainly is the best in El Dorado. If you want a slightly fancier experience, but do not want to pay a lot of money, Jacob’s Well pizza is the way to go. A small pizza is under $10, and a large pizza is under $15. They are both big enough to feed several people, so even with drinks added, the meal does not cost too much.
For those that are not in the mood for pizza, Jacob’s Well also offers soups, salads and sandwiches. These come in various combos or just by themselves. And, of course, you could just stop by for a cup of coffee.
As well as the traditional coffee drinks (and hot chocolate), Jacob’s Well has added to these drinks for a creative spin. You would try a Zebra Mocha, a Snickers Latte, or a Venice. These drinks are kind of expensive, but it’s worth it to support a local business.
