Staff and students at Butler Community College are experiencing major concerns as the college’s “updated” internet goes down more than it should.
The internet is the primary tool used for both Butler staff and students, and with the internet not working, classes are being cut early and assignments are not getting done.
The internet has been causing problems since the beginning of the semester, but they were minor at first. For the last couple of weeks of September, the minor problems have grown and now everyone is experiencing the lack of internet connection.
Butler has sent out numerous emails to explaining that they understand how frustrating it is, and they are working hard to fix the problem. It is unknown how long it will be until the internet is properly working.
As a student, I am furious that the internet is a problem. As a college student, I spend a lot of time on the internet for my classes. I live on campus and do not have a place to go that has stable internet. Many students that live on campus have problems with getting the internet to work at convenient times, and more than likely, they have the same problem with having another place to go to that has internet.
Teachers have been pushing online assignments and tests back, which causes all the work to pile up. This causes a lot of stress for everyone, especially the students.
Other than students having trouble with getting their work done, teachers are struggling with successfully teaching their classes. With today’s advanced technology, many teachers use the internet to teach and connect with their students. It is annoying and pointless sitting in a desk while watching the teacher try and get the internet to work or scrounge for paper notes that they may or may not have. We pay to be in class and learn something, so the least the school can do is get the internet to work properly.
Most importantly, teachers post students’ grades online. With the internet down half the time teachers are not able to update grades. Scholarships students have grade checks they need to turn in often, and some advisors suggest that the students on scholarship log onto Canvas and print out the grades from there, but there’s a rare time to do that when grades cannot get logged and internet is not able to be accessible.
There needs to be a solution for the internet, and it needs to happen sooner rather than later or the stress we are all experiencing will get worse.
