The Art Club rocked campus for its first meeting, literally. With the beginning of a new year, there are plenty of new faces on campus along with those who return. Sophomores Belle Rausch and Elza High are returning art scholarship students this fall semester who were looking for ways to get more out of their program. During one of the art scholarship meetings, an art club from previous years had been mentioned and that peaked the student’s interest.

“We had heard that there was an Art Club from a few years ago, (and) they had successful fundraisers for the department and they even made a trip to Texas,” Rausch said.

From time to time, the students have asked their professors for advice, but for the most part, it is entirely independent and the planning has been done by the two.

“If we needed help or had any questions, we would ask (Professor of Arts) Valerie Haring but for the most part it was us,” Rausch said.

The first meetings, took place Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m. Here the sophomores explained the core aspects of when the group would meet, what kinds of projects they would be doing and plans for the future. While the students were talking, those attending the meeting picked a rock and paint it to be left somewhere on campus with #BUCOARTCLUB written on the back or bottom.

“We got the idea from a page on Pinterest,” Rauch said.

Both days the meeting went well, the first meeting about 10 people and another eight came the following day. Right now, the goal is to continue to grow the Art Club as well as to start earning funding for trips.

“It’s so easy to get caught up in your work and forget there are people around you,” Rausch said when asked why the two wanted to start the club. “It would be a better way for people to connect on campus,” High said.

The Art Club is always eager for new members, and meetings are held every first second and third Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the 700 building, and on every last Friday of the month at 6 p.m. The group plans to take trips to Wichita for the Final Friday art shows.
