Butler offers many amenities to help students from student tutoring to health care services. However, is there a service to help students in a time of crisis? The answer is yes, and it comes in the form of the Butler Care Team.
Academics may seem like the number one priority at Butler, but the Butler staff would disagree. Faculty want to see students succeed and will help them on their path in doing so. However, sometimes life can be rough and a student can deal with problems that are unforeseen. For problems that come in the way of academics, Butler will try to find a way to get students back on track. When talking to Associate Dean Shannon Covert, she spoke of helping students solve problems outside of academics.
“We help with connecting (students) with resources on campus,” Covert said.
Counseling can be offered to students who need it. The food pantry can help students get groceries, so that they do not go hungry. The Care Team can also help connect students with scholarship opportunities that they otherwise would have never known about.
However, something that makes the Care Team important is that they can help a student whose academic materials are stolen. For example, if a student has his or her car broken into and their books and school materials are stolen, then the Butler Care Team can give them connections where they might receive emergency loans to help them on their academic journey.
One student has recently been involved with the Care Team. The student, who wishes to remain anonymous, had just one thing to say when asked to describe her experience with the Care Team.
“Completely amazing…” a student said. “(The) instructors have been more than willing to work me.”
The student involved was robbed at gunpoint. After divulging what happened to one of her teacher’s, she was put in contact with the Care Team to help with her pending financial aid. She was able to receive $500 of her financial aid early, which helped with this unfortunate incident.
In all, without the Care Team, students would be unable to deal with the cards that they are dealt.
