A rising star from Bristol, England, freshman Charlotte Smith is one out of many students here at Butler in the international program. Smith, a soccer player for the Butler Grizzles, moved to the United States on Monday, Aug. 7.
Smith was recruited through her agency, Future Elite Sports. In England, students apply for this opportunity, and then they receive a personal agent. She heard about them through her program with the England Colleges Representative Team.
“I definitely want to continue to play soccer,” Smith said. “The intensity of the game and the technicality is higher than in England. Butler has a great soccer program, which has been shown by the past national tournament’s appearances and is a great pathway to Four Year Programs.”
“This means that when I have time to relax in the afternoon, my family are already sleeping,” Smith said. “I try to Facetime them as much as possible.”
Getting to communicate with family is hard because England is six hours behind Kansas.
Smith also mentioned how she missed her home a lot, her family, her two dogs, CUPS OF TEA, English chocolate and English television programs. The tea is cold and normally flavored (peach sweet tea or green tea), but the tea in England is kind of rustic with milk.
She mentioned how England is much colder than Kansas, and days go by a lot slower here.
“At home, I would get up and go to college (12th and 13th grade) to have practice and then have classes, after that I would go to work until 6:30,” Smith said. “Then I would come home and go to practice in the evening.”
She is interested in sports and biology, which is incorporated with her interests of what she may want to do in the future. Smith plans to major in kinesiology and exercise science, and she wants to hopefully move to physiotherapy or paramedic science.
