Academic advising is a crucial part of college, according to advisors. At least once in their time at a college or university, a student will meet with an advisor to figure their educational goals and how best to reach them. At Butler, spring enrollment for 2018 began on Monday, Oct. 23 and summer enrollment will begin on Monday, Nov. 27. The spring semester will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Shannon Herbert, an academic advisor, suggests that students should enroll for classes as soon as they can. They will have a better selection of classes when they enroll early, and they will not have to deal with certain classes being unavailable or not meeting meet prerequisite, graduation or transfer requirements.
Herbert also shared that enrolling for classes is easier in community colleges than in four-year universities.
“Usually at a university, students must schedule an appointment to meet with specific advisors in specific departments,” Herbert said. “There are also more specific deadlines and application dates at universities.”
Here at Butler, students sit down with advisors and listen to suggestions on how best to reach their educational goals. Prior to enrollment, students should think about factors that influence what classes they take, such as work and any other time commitments. They should also look at the interactive schedule online to see which classes are available and note any questions they have prior to their appointment with advising.
All new students need to meet with an advisor for enrollment, but after that students can fill out a release to enroll online found on the Butler website.
Students need to bring several documents to an advising appointment. Lists of documents needed can be found on the Butler website for new students, returning students, high school students and international students.
Appointments are available most Mondays and Fridays, except for college holidays. They are at least 30 minutes long, depending on the status of the student and purpose of the appointment.
To make an advising appointment, go to butlercc.edu to the student’s tab and click on academic advising in the drop down menu. One needs to know their student ID number or Social Security number to make an appointment online.
The Advising Office can also take walk-ins on a first come, first serve basis, Tuesdays through Thursdays. If a student is more than 10 minutes late to their appointment, they are considered a walk-in and must reschedule or wait to see the next available advisor.
