The Butler women’s basketball team beat the Lady Broncbusters from Garden City 77-53 on Saturday, Nov. 11. This was the one game that went right for Butler athletics on Saturday as the football suffered a loss as well as the men’s basketball team.

The Grizzlies jumped out to an early 10 point lead as they lead the first quarter, 14-4. Throughout the whole first half, Butler was in control as at one point in the second quarter, the team went on a 16-0, run jumping out to 33-9 lead.

“We came out and played really really well and we were aggressive which exactly followed our game plan,” Helmer said.

In the second half, the team got into some foul trouble, allowing multiple people to come in and score. Erika Mattingly led the way with 14 points, Destiny Gooden had 13, Jalise Smallwood and Awreona Ransom each had 12.

The team overall shot 51 percent from the floor but had 22 turnovers.

In the second half, Garden City cut the lead down to 16 before Butler went on an 8-0 run to squelch any hopes that the Lady Broncbusters had.

“We had way too many turnovers and that’s got to get fixed as well as defending the paint,” Helmer said.

Overall, this Grizzlies team is going to be one to watch out for as they look to make a national tournament appearance in Lubbock, Texas.
