On Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, around 12:57 p.m., a shooting occurred in front of the Samco Gas Station in Anniston, Alabama. Former Butler defensive back DeMario “Zoo” Burnett, 19, is in custody after shooting Zondrick Foster, 22, over an apparent drug related robbery.
Damien Cortez Curry, 23, was also shot by Burnett and taken to the University of Alabama Birmingham Regional Medical Center. Burnett was shot as well and drove himself to Regional Medical Center after the incident.
Curry turned himself in to Anniston police also after being charged with murder within the case. On Thursday, Jan. 4, Burnett turned himself in, and he is charged with capital murder because the murder occurred during a robbery.
For now, Burnett is being held in the Anniston City Jail with a $250,000 bond. His preliminary hearing was scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 25 at 1:30 p.m. in which the county courts will decide if it should go to the grand jury. If the grand jury indicts him, he will receive a trial. The Butler Lantern newspaper will keep readers updated as information becomes available.
