Starting your college career at a community college is a common choice for many college students. Many college students are not sure what they want to major in, so going to a community college to figure out their plans can be a smart choice. It is also a cheaper alternative than going to a university all four years. Some students earn their associate’s degree and then go to a university after finishing two years. Other students transfer after the first semester.

Sophomore Isabella Lee, a resident’s assistant, works in the Box Office in the Fine Arts building also known as the 700 building. Lee has attended Butler for two years and is earning her associate’s degree in dance. She is majoring in psychology and minoring in dance. In the future, she hopes to pursue dance therapy as a career. She chose to earn her associate’s in dance because she figured it would be an easy major while getting her general education courses out of the way. Once she transfers to Wichita State University (WSU), she will have almost all of her general education courses out of the way, and she will be able to focus on her psychology classes.

Lee chose WSU because she is accustomed to the Wichita area and likes it. The university also has good programs for dance and psychology. Lee has loved her experience at Butler, especially with the dance department.

“I love Butler and will really miss it,” Lee said. “I love how tight knit the dance department is. It is really welcoming and accepting despite skill level of experience with dance. I highly suggest everyone take a dance class even if you have never done it before, it is a lot of fun.”

Sophomore Gisell Gonzalez plans on attending Butler for one more semester in the fall and will then transfer to Calvary University, in Kansas City, Missouri, to take a bible class for the spring semester and will then attend Wichita State the following fall.

During her first year at Butler, Gonzalez was in band, the Drum Line and Pep Band. This year, she is doing stage theatre where she makes the props for the plays the theatre department puts on. Gonzalez wanted to become an actress when she started college, but she decided she would be better at something else. She plans to major in counseling at WSU to become a college or high school counselor.

“Butler has helped so much in my life,” Gonzalez said. “It has helped me in my life by making lifelong friends, helped me see a wider range of the major that I wanted to do when I started college.”

Many students choose to transfer after a year of Butler, or some even half a year. Freshman Connor Garcia is finishing his first year at Butler and will attend Kansas State University next year. He chose to attend Butler for a year because it allowed him to take his general education courses at an inexpensive cost. He is going to Kansas State University (KSU) for the engineering department to study computer science.

“I became interested in how computers work, and I want to develop efficient technology,” Garcia said.

According to many students, Butler is a great way to start one’s college career. Students can save money, make friends and get a great experience being involved in one of many of Butler’s groups.
