Tell me the story of how the sun loved the sun loved the moon, so much he died every night to let her breath.” She asks into the cold night. He held her close on the couch, the couch that faced the open balcony. It overlooks the night city, cars pass by, and violin music drifts from an open window somewhere down the block.

“I tell you this story every night darling,” he replies softly with a chuckle, his fingers get lost in her mass of ash brown hair.

“I know but I love it,” she says while staring into the night, the curtains billow in the breeze. It smells of summer, or at least the beginning of summer, the time of year when there are no cares or worries.

“Okay. Long ago, when all of the water, land, and sky were created so were the sun and the moon. At first the sun never set, it always stood on the high point of the sky. Sun worried that is he set then all the land and the creatures that roamed it would be lost in darkness. Sun watched the creatures from his place in the sky; he noticed that everyone had someone to share life with.

He slowly grew sad; his heart was heavy in his chest. The sun began to look far into darkness that surrounded him for companion. The creatures that inhabited the land and the sea noticed their friend in the sky had a duller light.

The clouds in the sky felt the sorrow the sun. Rain fell upon the lands and the waters started to rise to the tips of the mountains. The sun began to realize that the creatures of the land were beginning to drown because of his sorrow. Sun decided it was best that he leave for a while, even if his people were left in darkness, they would still live.

As he began to set for the first time in a million years, silver light began to appear from the other side of the lands. She was beautiful, she took a deep breath and cast a soft glow among the creatures of the land.

A halo of silver light surrounded her and she looked among the people with great love. Sun realized that she was made for him and he was made for her. Slowly she took his breath away and he no longer lived, as his last breath escaped his lips he knew that he was dying for his companion. In the end it was worth it, he closed his eyes replaying the glimpse he caught of her in his mind.

Moon watched over the lands in wonder and excitement, Sun had left his spot in the sky and took his last breath for her. She knew that his spot was in the sky and not asleep so after many hours she finally took her last breathe and fell softly.

Sun awoke and realized Moon was letting him breath again. He began to cry, not out of sadness but out of joy. He finally found a companion.

They spent years and years only seeing glimpses of each other, but they still loved each other with all they could. Every day sun would give a piece of him to moon, he called it a star.” He took a deep breath and kissed her head as he stared into the darkness.

“And you know what? The most beautiful sight is the sun setting and rising because the creatures of the land knew it was out of the love Sun and Moon held for each other.” He let his last words drift into the city, almost as if the story was traveling up to Moon.
