Shortly after the school year began, Butler Community College announced a new agreement involving Wichita State University’s Frank Barton School of Business. The agreement lays out the required courses needed for a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

On Friday, Aug. 4, the two insitutions met at Butler’s Andover campus to finalize and sign the transfer agreement. Butler President Kim Krull and Vice President of Academics Lori Winningham were present to sign for and represent Butler Community College. Representing Wichita State at the signing was Provost and Senior Vice President Richard Muma and Dean of the College of Business Anand Desai.

The deal provides student with a “road map” for their time at Butler and, eventually, Wichita State. The Wichita State bachelor’s degree in Business Administration is a 120 credit hour degree. Students are shown 60 credit hours worth of classes to take at Butler, all of which will transfer to Wichita State, where they will complete the remaining 60 credit hours.

“Often times when we have an arrangement with a university for transfer students, we are now seeing [those schools] say 60 is the most we will accept from the community college,” Winningham said. “So this [agreement] helps the student know which courses should [they] take so that [they] are not wasting [their] time and money.”

Wichita State and Butler have worked together for quite a while, with most Wichita State’s transfers coming from Butler. From Engineering Technology to Exercise Science to Nursing, Butler transfers many students to bachelor’s degree programs at Wichita State.

“There are no requirements to get into the program,” Professor of Business Administration and Accounting Janice Akao said. “If you graduate with an associate degree from Butler and are enrolling in the Barton School of Business, you will be guaranteed 60 credit hours towards the 120 credit hours required by WSU.”

You do have to apply to the Barton School of Business. This can be quite a lengthy process as it involves evaluations and interviews.

Butler and Wichita State are excited for the continued relationship the schools share. In the coming years, they are hoping to add even more degrees to the transfer agreement list.
