Leidersten, Achey leads soccer through successful week

The Butler women’s soccer team was currently 8-3 overall (5-0 in Jayhawk Conference), following four more wins in conference. Saturday, Sept. 15, Butler defeated Coffeyville 3-1 on the road. Freshman defender Sandra Thiman scored in the 7th minute, followed by a 58th minute goal by sophomore forward Zion DeWerff, assisted by sophomore defender Kaylee Swanson.  Sophomore midfield Alexis Palmer scored her first of the season in the 71st minute.

On Wednesday, Sept. 19, Butler shut out Neosho County 6-0. Sophomore forward Paige Achey was a star, scoring four goals on five shots. Two of these goals were scored off penalty shots.

Monday, Sept. 24, the Grizzles were on the road in Arkansas City, Kansas to take on Cowley County. Goals by Achey and Elise Liedersten gave Butler a 2-1 win. Aylin Torres and DeWerff both recorded assists in the game as well.

The Grizzlies returned home on Wednesday, Sept. 26 to take on Allen County.

In the 10th minute. DeWerff dribbled down the right side, out ran her defender and crosses, the ball placing it on the foot of Leidersten, who touched the ball twice, then sent it into the net, giving Butler a 1-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, Butler’s offenses was attacking once again. Melonie Baca dribbled up the middle and drove past two Allen defenders passing to an open Leidersten, who launched a shot, past the Allen keeper, moving the score up to 2-0.

In the 51st minute, Achey was covered by two defenders, juking out one, and fighting the other defender. She had one step and crosses right to Leidersten with the header and out beat the Allen keeper, which giving Leidersten the hat trick, Butler 3-0.

“It feels good, we are finding our game more and more, and it’s fun playing together.” Leidersten said.

In the 61st minute, Butler was awarded a free kick. Leidersten lined up to kick and opted to pass it to Achey to left and crossed it to Tessa Irvine who finished the play and scoring, Butler a 4-0 lead.

A minute later, Butler’s offense drew a corner kick. Achey took the kick, placing it in the middle of the box, giving Baca an easy header, which scored the fifth and final goal of the night.

“Today we were very dangerous, and I think we were a handful to defend against, just from Monday and to tonight, two completely different attacking teams for us, I was very happy to see that improvement just in 48 hours” Coach Hunter said after Butler’s performance last night.

This coming Saturday, Sept. 29, the Butler Grizzlies will be on the road up to take on Kansas City Kansas Community College.
