Butler and Dodge city were forced into a double overtime after the Conquistadors scored a touchdown with only 57 seconds left on the game clock. After both teams would make a field goal in the first overtime period, Butler would than block Dodge City’s second field goal attempt, setting up the game winning kick made by Sophomore kicker Tyler Zentner. The kick would give the Grizzlies the 33-30 win over the Conqs.
Sophomore quarterback Trae Self would connect with freshman tight end Rhett Weidenbacher for two touchdowns, while sophomore running back Ja’Kevious Vickers would also add in a fourth quarter rushing touchdown. Zentner helped throughout the game, making all four of his attempted field goals.
Sophomore running back Makiya Caesar led the Grizzlies rushing attack with 157 yards on 26 carries, while Vickers would gain 111 yards on 32 carries, giving Butler its first game with two 100-yard rushers since Oct. 4, 2012.
Butler trailed at half 13-10, but would regain the lead after a touchdown throw from Self to Weidenbacher with 6:49 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies would put together a 10-play, 79-yard drive that opened with runs of 24 and 10 yards by Caesar to move past the 50 yard line. After a 4th-and-2nd conversion, the Grizzlies moved inside the Conquistadors 20. Three plays later, Self would hit Weidenbacher for another touchdown.
After a Butler punt, Dodge City would drive 80 yards to regain the lead 20-17 after Dodge City quarterback Drew Harris would hit Anthony Watkins with a 5-yard touchdown pass. Harris would have two big completions on the drive, connecting with Zachary Hughes on a 38-yard pass, and than hitting Tyrice Richie for a 22-yard pass.
Butler scored again until 7:53 remaining in the game when Vickers busted his way through the line for 3-yard touchdown.
With 5:18 left , Zentner would hit a field goal to put Butler up 27-20 after sophomore cornerback Tay Gowan returned an interception back to the Dodge City 31-yard line.
The Conquistadors bounced back with a game-tying drive. Harris hit freshman receiver Terrell Warner on a 4th-and-6 conversion to tie the game 27-27.
Dodge City won the coin toss in overtime and elected to play defense. Butler drove down to the 6-yard line with runs of 7, 10 and 3 by Caesar. The Grizzlies were forced to kick a 21-yard field goal, made by Zentner.
Dodge picked up a first down on their first overtime possession on a 3rd-and-1, when Harris hit Ritchie on a 10-yard out route. The Grizzly defence forced back to back incomplete passes from the 4-yard line which would passes from the 4-yard line which would bring out sophomore kicker Devonta Guillory, who would hit a 21-yard field goal.
In the second overtime, Harris would throw two incomplete passes to start the drive, and would be sacked by sophomore Grizzly defensive end Jordan Smith on third down. Guillory’s 50-yard field goal was than blocked and would fall into the hands of sophomore defensive end Jacoby Jones.
Butler would fail to get a first down on the final overtime possession, which would bring out Zentner. Zentner would than hit the 35-yard field goal to win the game.
Defensively for the Grizzlies, sophomore linebacker Hunter Kier would finish with the game with 12 tackles, five solo and one tackle for a loss. Jones would also finish with six tackles and a sack.
“I did expect this to be a trap game for us. Coming off of an emotional win against our biggest rival Coffeyville, and next week being against Hutch,” said Coach Tim Schaffner.
This week the Grizzlies face one of their toughest opponents in Hutchinson Community College, who is 4-1 on the season, 2-0 in the conference .
“Coming up next week we’ve gotta turn it up even more,” Jacoby Jones said.
