On Saturday, Sept. 29, Butler hit the road to take on the Kansas City Kansas Blue Devils.
The Grizzlies went out and beat the Blue Devils 3-0. Freshman forward Elise Leidersten scored the first goal, assisted from sophomore midfielder Melonie Baca. Freshman forward Zion DeWerff doubled the lead with a goal of her own, assisted by Leidersten. Sophomore defender Aylin Torres scored the final goal of the night, also assisted by Leidersten, making the score 3-0.
On Wednesday, Oct. 3, the Grizzlies returned home to BG Products Veterans Sports Complex to take on the Cowley County Tigers on October 3. Freshman defender Sandra Thiman scored the first goal of the game, assisted by DeWerff. Then DeWerff got the second goal, assisted with the cross by sophomore forward Paige Achey, Then Achey just took over the game by scoring three goals, giving her a hat trick.
“We did good,” Achey said. “We made some good passes and good crosses like we were supposed to. We had some good finishes. We are getting better as the season goes on.”
The Butler Grizzlies women’s soccer team took on their rival, the Coffeyville Red Ravens on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at home at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.
Coffeyville started off with possession. Butler’s defense held its ground as the Red Ravens offense attacked.
In the 7th minute, on the left side Achey passed the ball to Leidersten. She made her way up the field with a few more passes, but it ended up going right to Leidersten and she crosses it low down to the right and out of know where Torres just fired the ball into the net for the first goal of the night, giving Butler a 1-0 lead.
Coffeyville then responded in the 31st minute, a goal by Gabriela Rodrigues.
At the half, Butler and Coffeyville were tied 1-1.
“We made some bad giveaways…, now we’re dealing with a team who has all of the momentum,” Head Coach Adam Hunter said. “Nothing fiery, just some tactical adjustments.”
As the second half started, the Grizzlies kicked it into gear and their offense started to attack.
In the 52nd minute, on the right-side, DeWerff passed it to Leidersten and she crossed right to the path of Achey. She scored creating the push that Butler needed, doubling the lead.
Two minutes later, Leidersten made one move to get away from the Coffeyville defender and she decided to take a shot towards the goal and put that one in. Following the goal, Butler led 3-1.
In the 68th minute, on the left side, Achey cut down, then cut back to beat her defender and soon crossed right to the foot of Leidersten with the light touch putting it in for the goal, giving Butler 4-1 lead.
In the 74th minute, sophomore forward Caro Limon was alone on the left side of the field, she crossed to a wide open DeWerff who kicked it with her left foot for the final goal of the night, putting the game on ice. Butler finished off the cold night with a 5-1, win over Coffeyville.
Butler continued their season as they went on the road on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 3 P.M. to take on Neosho County.
