God to an Atheist

I see god in triangles
And the way dominoes fall;
I see god in living things,
Even the things that crawl.

I don’t see god in clouds,
Unless you count the raindrops –
I don’t need to see god in churches.
Or crosses.
Or hijabs.

I see god in numbers,
And uncanny coincidence;
I see god in balance,
Events teetering on a fence.

I don’t see god in wine,
But in the blurry mirth it gives;
I don’t see god in people,
But the balance in which it lives.

I don’t see god in pure publicity,
Only falsehoods and facades –
I don’t need to see god in cathedrals.
Or crusades.
Or jihad.

I don’t see god in prayers,
But the benevolence intended;
I don’t see god in service,
But in unity mended.
