The Fall Butler Vocal music concert took place Thursday, Oct. 11 through the Saturday, Oct. 13 this month featuring all the vocal programs on campus such as the Concert Choir, the Chambers Singers, The Butler Ladies, A Cappella and the Headliners. Other than the Headliners, who performed at the Kansas State Fair this year, this will be the first performance of the year for most of the groups.
The 120-voice concert choir sings a more classically influenced set starting with “Amavolovolo,” a traditional Zulu song arranged by Rudolph de Beer. They will also perform “Hisakata No,” a Japanese poem turned song, and “Please Stay” by Jake Runestad described as an anthem of hope in the face of mental illness and depression.
“It’s just a great way to support everyone,” Sarah Munn, a Chambers singer, said speaking on the importance of the concerts. “There a lot of great different styles that I think anyone could enjoy.”
The Chamber Singers performed “At the Round Earths Imagined Corners” from John Donne and Williametta Spencer. Later on in the performance, they performed “Amor De Mi Alma” from Garcilaso De Le Vega and Z. Randal Stroope. A lot of work is put into these concerts not only inside the classroom but outside as well, according to Munn.
“In class we spend about two hours and about the same amount of time throughout the week out of class,” Munn, a freshman, said.
The Butler Ladies performed “Already Home” from Althouse, “Carole King Medley” arranged by Emerson, which includes “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman,” “I Feel the Earth Move” and “Beautiful.” The Ladies ended with “Black of White” arranged by Shaw.
The A Cappella group is directed by Matthew Udland, professor of vocal music, performed “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” arranged by Udland, and featuring Jaedyn Cooper and Jordan Fox, “Rather Be” arranged by Sharpe featuring Rebeccah Hale and “Stronger,” another arrangement from Udland featuring Tamiah Jones.
The Headliner performed “From Page to Stage” which is the same performance that rocked the State Fair last month. “From Page to Stage” is as literal as it seems as arrangements are taken from books or pieces of literature and turned into songs. This included Notables from the 1946 movie musical Blue Skies, Men in Tights arranged by Jacob Narverud from the tale of Robin Hood. The Jitterbug comes from the Wizard of Oz and “Green Eggs and Ham” is from Dr. Seuss.
“From the Page to Stage” is the only vocal concert scheduled for the fall 2018 semester.
