Big Apple to small town El Dorado, Kai Lewis came to Butler on a track scholarship. In her second year at Butler, Lewis is originally from Trinidad and Tobago. She also plans to get her degree in nursing in the future. She is excited to get out and explore her options for the next step of her track career.
Lewis moved from Trinidad and Tobago to New York in 2014. She lived in Canarsie, Brooklyn until she moved to El Dorado for college. She is currently 1,382 miles away from home. While she does miss home, she is glad that she is going to college. She thinks that El Dorado is quiet, but she just thinks that’s how the town is and doesn’t mind it.
“At the moment, Butler offered me tuition and showed great interest, persistently, and not only this but two of my other friends attended Butler,” Lewis said. “They had recommended to me how good the sprint program was and showed me some proof, so I said ‘why not.’”
Lewis currently participates in the short sprints, long jump and throws javelin. She talked about how the sprint program has improved her performance. It has helped her improve her form and phases while running. Her strength and endurance have also improved. She plans on taking her track career to the next level at a four-year college.
Lewis is currently waiting to go to explore her options at other colleges. She has five visits planned for her future. Her future visits include exploring colleges in North and South Carolina, Florida and Houston, Texas. She plans on competing in track at whichever college she plans to attend.
Even though Lewis is an athlete, she also has other plans ahead of her. She is planning on becoming a neonnatal nurse because of her passion for children.
Even though she is an athlete, she feels like she can balance school and track very well. She sometimes gets worn-out doing both, but she has the perseverance to keep moving on and looking towards her future.
“Kai is an amazing girl who is from the Big Apple,” Taylor Vanetta, a fellow student, said. “She loves to take pictures of the clouds and sunsets, but her personality is the true beauty.”
Lewis’ personality outshines her. She is never afraid to tell a person how it is. She is also very loyal to her friends and would do anything for them. Lewis is a very caring person and always asks people how they are. Lewis also enjoys writing poetry and singing in her free time. She also has a love for turtles and taking pictures of the sunset.
Lewis is a long way from home but is improving herself every day. Her personality is what shines the brightest and makes her a unique person. Lewis has a bright future ahead of her.
