Engaging classes don’t prove to be helpful

If you were in the shoes of a college student, you would want to focus on your main classes as much as possible, right? If you are taking harder classes that are required for your major, then you want to focus on them, in order to pass and keep your GPA up. The Engaging class prevents students from doing this. It adds unwanted and unneeded work to the students, while they should be focusing on their harder classes that require more time. On top of just getting rid of this class altogether, there are some things that they could do to make it better.

In order to complete your major at Butler Community College, you have to take an engaging class that has to do with your major. For example, mine was called Engaging in Health Sciences because I am a Health Science major. It is a one credit hour class, so you are only there for one hour a week. Almost every single class that I went to, we were only in there for about 20 minutes. So, it is a waste of time to sit in a class for 20 minutes, when you could be doing something more useful to help with your other classes.

The class consists of basic college skills, such as note taking or trying to get through college in general. There are so many other ways that this class could be beneficial. It seems to me that they are just giving us busy work, other than giving us work that would actually matter and help us. They are giving us work that is just taking away time from our other classes that are harder, and as a matter of fact, more important.

Instead of just busy work, they could give us assignments that actually help us with our major. They could give us essays to write, that would help with our writing skills. It would also be beneficial to put in assignments that give us information on our major, so we know what we are going into. In my class, we did not even have a portfolio at the end. A portfolio has everything that we have done throughout the semester in it. A portfolio would be so helpful for our future. We could bring it to our future schools to show them how we write and what we are capable of. I know for a fact that the work I did in that class this semester, I would not want in my portfolio.

As you can see, this class is just a burden on a student’s shoulders that they don’t need. If the campus doesn’t want to get rid of the class, there are some ways that they can improve it. I feel this class could be very beneficial to students, if the teachers just put more thought and effort into it.
