On the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 30, nearly 400 students, from both Butler and various high schools, filed into the Welcome Center to learn performance tips and tricks at the Music Theatre Choral Festival hosted by the Headliners. Butler Fine Arts scholars hosted this event for high school students to experience how college students prepare for a music festival. At the beginning, they taught the students a sheet of music that they would later on dance and sing to.
Special guests such as Music Theater of Wichita Director Wayne Bryant offered advice for auditions. He also summarized what he looks for in the actors that perform. Students attending the festival said that they felt very comfortable asking the students and instructors questions about auditions. Quentin Anderson, a Northeast Magnet student, also added that the atmosphere at Butler felt like family. In addition to this, the books and tuition scholarship he may receive persuades him to attend Butler Community College.
“{It} would recommend {this event} to seniors for a nice long day of fun,” Anderson said.
Following lunch, students felt energized for the grand rehearsal. Butler and high school students felt excited and empowered for the choreography.
“The choreography was a motivation to strive,” Austyn White, a sophomore and Headliner, said. In the end, music brought them–brought us together.”
As the day progressed both groups performed a number as Headliners would. After the performance the men of Headliners performed “Men in Tights,” considered a fun and upbeat performance of feminine men from those who witnessed this number.
Butler Community College Fine Arts has a variety of upcoming shows for this semester. “Being Frank,” a Children’s Theatre performance, will be performed on Saturday, Feb. 23. Following the musical, Butler Show Choir Spectacular will captivate the audience that night.
