At the start of the 2018-19 academic school year, Butler Community College implemented a printing regulation on students who used printers on campus.
Taking effect at the following Butler sites in El Dorado, Andover and Rose Hill, students receive $5 to print on campus. This money is preloaded to a student’s Butler ID card and using this feature is quite easy, according to those who implemented the policy.
When printing at a public printer on Butler’s campus, hit print to send the print job to the printer. Then, go to the printer and the screen should show a sign-in screen. At this point, slide your ID card and it will sign you in, showing all active print jobs at the printer. Now, select your job and it will print your pages and automatically take the money out of your account.
Out of printing money on your card? The process is simple and easy to add money to your account. If students are on campus, they can visit Accounts Receivable in the 600 building on the El Dorado campus or in the 6000 building at the Andover campus.
“You can come to our office (Accounts Receivable) here or in Andover,” Accounts Receivable Manager Donnie Mercer said. “You can go to the bookstore also… So that all works if you are paying with cash or debit/credit card.”
While cash and card are the most common ways, Accounts Receivable can also use financial aid money, given that you have extra aid available.
The printing regulations were added in an effort to offset costs for printers and printing supplies. Another push was due to the students who would overuse the printing capability like printing entire textbooks or PDFs.
“Our goal is not to make money,” Vice President of Information Technology Bill Young said. “My goal is to offset costs. I think that is important for people to know. We are just hoping to help offset some of those costs.
At first there were many complaints with the new regulations, but as the year has continued, they have gone down significantly, according to Young.
The goal is to reevaluate each year to see if the $5 preloaded amount is a quality amount or if it needs to be raised or lowered. The initial $5 amount was made after looking at surrounding schools to see what they offered and their access to printers.
If students would like to know how much they have spent and when, students can request a print history at the Accounts Receivable office.
As always, if students ever need technical assistance, they can access the Help Desk via phone at 316-322-3306 or visit them just inside the front doors of the Student Union (1000 building) on the El Dorado campus.
