The 2019 ‘flu season’ has been relatively mild compared to last year’s epidemic. There is no exact way to know how bad flu season is going to be.

“People kind of throw around the flu word lightly,” Director of College Health Services Jaime Sharp said. “There has been an upper respiratory head cold illness that is rampant through campus. I’ve probably seen like 40 people with that, but I’ve tested multiple of them for the influenza and they’ve all come back negative.”

The flu shot is a recommendation by the CDC and various news stations. Though there seems to be controversy surrounding the flu shot, the rumors of the flu shot causing the flu has not been proven.

“There’s lots of rumors or speculation that ‘oh, the flu shot makes me sick’ and there’s no study that backs that up,” Sharp said.

Flu shots are offered for free at both the El Dorado and Andover campuses.

“You can walk in and get it or they can call and schedule an appointment at our clinic here and in Andover, it’s free,” Sharp said. “All they have to do is come in and fill out a consent form and then we give it. It’s about a five minute process, so it’s pretty easy.”
In addition to getting the flu shot, there are many other ways to avoid getting sick. Sometimes it is hard to avoid, especially being around a lot of people all day long, but some habits can be implemented to keep a good immune system.

“Basically just staying healthy, getting lots of rest and eating well,” Sharp said. “Eat fruits and vegetables, but yeah honestly washing your hands is the main thing. Don’t be around anybody that’s sick, get your flu shot.”

Sharp mentioned that it was not too late for anybody to get their flu shot.

“It takes up to two weeks for the flu shot to kick in and help build up that immunity,” Sharp said. “Last year’s flu season ran clear through May.”

Students may find comfort in knowing that their concerns will be taken seriously and handled accordingly.

“I have been to the nurse on campus, [and] yes I would recommend her,” freshman mass communications major Madison Brown said. “She was very nice and patient with me explaining my problems.”

Anyone in need of a flu shot or a checkup should visit the 1100 building (West Dorms) Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or call 316-322-3371.
