The instrumental department will have their last performance on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. Every group from the instrumental department will play several pieces.
The concert band will play six pieces, one of which is “Moon Phases 81” by Scott Director. The jazz ensemble will play three pieces, one of which is “Moonlight Serenade” by Glenn Miller. The show band will play four pieces. A vocalist will assist the Jazz Ensemble for two songs, and an instrumentalist will help with another set of songs. One vocalist will perform “Think” by Aretha Franklin.
Instrumental Department Professor Brett Martinez is looking forward to how the department will do compared to their departmental concert in the fall.
“The challenge in the fall is that around half [of] our group is returning from the year before, but about half our group is brand new, and they come from a variety of high schools with a variety of backgrounds, and kind of a variety of previous experiences,” Martinez said. “So in the fall, our main objective is taking all of those diverse experiences and putting all of that into our Butler band and our group in the spring, a lot of this music we started pretty early in the semester, so we’ve been able to work on it and polish it and play with it all semester.”
Freshman sociology major Amy Werak is excited to see what the department will be able to put together as well.
“Although the pieces we are performing are quite interesting, my personal favorite would have to be ‘Moon Phases 81,’” Werak said. This concert will probably go well. We have been working hard for the last few months. I’m just hoping everyone can pull their own part.”
Freshman health science major Carley Bullard is looking forward to this performance because it will be the last one she will ever play in.
“Considering this semester is almost over, I am looking forward to enjoying my last couple of weeks before clarinet,” Bullard said. “I have been playing the clarinet since fifth grade and decided to no longer continue it into the next college I plan to transfer to.”
Overall, Martinez is happy with the students and how the semester went.
“It’s a really active department, and I’m really proud of the students,” Martinez said.
