Mainstream media ignores important stories

The news is a joke. Someone has to say it, so let it be me. On my phone I have three news apps: FOX, CNN and The New York Times. Having three news sources at the touch of a button sounds convenient to anybody. I can see both sides of the political scope and have one news site that tries to be unbiased. The problem with having these three national news sources? They don’t report the news.

FOX and CNN are the two most known sources of news across the country. Someone might expect to turn them on and see breaking news in the United States. They would be wrong. Opening the FOX app, the first thing I see are three stories on President Donald Trump or the U.S. government in some form. Opening the CNN app, there are four articles reporting about Trump. Open The New York Times app, I didn’t even bother counting how many were about the president or the U.S. government.

Why do I care this much? Why must the working American be subjected to a barrage of government news; yes, it’s important, but it is not this important. Seeing non-stop coverage of what Trump ate for dinner is not news, hearing about something that happened within the government three days in a row, is not news. What should be making the news are less covered stories that you don’t hear about unless you look for them.

When was the last time the news reported on the Flint water crisis? What is even happening there anymore? What’s happening with gun crime in Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles or Baltimore? What’s happening on the border? The opioid crisis? Industrial hemp farming? Legalization of medicinal marijuana? Online safety and security?
There are countless stories that could be reported, countless events in the United States that are washed over by the media. Why? America should be focusing on what is important, the pressing issues, the real problems. I come from a country not unlike America, but turning on the news gets you the NEWS. Looking in on what appears on my screen here makes me worry not just for America as a country, but for the minds of its people. There will come a day where America cares more about the White House than its own people. It may have already come.

America needs to wake up. Stop worrying about what the president says and start worrying about what is happening in the country, the people, the place you live, your country. The news is a joke: It’s time to wake up and smell the bacon because it’s burning.

  1. Brilliant article. Loving in the UK I can definitely tell you that there is more going on in the world than what President Bush has or hasn’t done. There is more to life than how bad the government is being managed. Love your closing line. Really made me laugh. Keep up the good work!
