The Butler Men’s and Women’s track team finished their season off at the NJCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 18 in Hobbs, New Mexico.The Grizzlies claimed two national titles from their men’s 4×100 m relay team and in the men’s 100m dash. The men’s and women’s team also had several top place finishers in other events.
The men’s 4×100 relay team, made up of freshman Cardet Bienvenue, freshman Mark Doyley, sophomores Javaughn Spicer and Tavarius Wright won nationals in the men’s 4×100 m with a time of 39.20 seconds. They also broke a 14-year-old school record, which was previously held in 2005 with a time of 39.90 seconds.
Wright was excited to come out on top because of a successful season for this relay team.
“…. being a sophomore I felt it was my job to make sure we did what we had to do to win and and trust coach, God and do everything to the best of our abilities,” Wright said.
Wright was also named national champion in the men’s 100m dash with a time of 10.12 seconds.
Some other top place finishers for the Grizzlies included a 6th finish in the 20m dash from Spicer with a time of 20.93 seconds. Freshman Derrick Boyce also placed 7th in the javelin, and freshman Jeremy Lawson placed 8th in the long jump.
For the women, sophomore Octavia Cato placed 6th in the women’s 100m dash with a time with a time of 11.88 seconds and freshman Tamera Rhode placed 8th in the women’s heptathlon.
