The country’s top rusher as of Saturday, Sept. 21 is Butler’s Brock Sturges, a 5-foot-10-inch, 210-pound running back with 605 yards through four games. He also tops the nation with seven rushing touchdowns early in the season.
Sturges, a freshman, is originally from Beaumont, Texas but graduated from high school in Allen, Texas, where he rushed for 3,123 yards and had 43 touchdowns during his junior and senior years. After being introduced to football by his father at six years old, he has been playing the game for 13 years.
“I just let my natural abilities come to me and let God do the rest,” Sturges said.
In 2018, Sturges was a three-star recruit who chose to commit to Arizona State over Arizona, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Utah and Vanderbilt. He was Arizona State’s first running back commit in the 2018 class. Sturges was also ranked 29th best running back in the nation prior to making the commitment to the Sun Devils. Sturges decided to leave the program in early October of 2018.
Sturges is now the starting running back for the Grizzlies. After his performance against the Coffeyville Red Ravens on Saturday, Sept. 14, Sturges was named KJCCC’s offensive player of the week. During this game, he rushed for 225 yards on 24 carries and had two touchdowns.
“I think there’s always someone out working you, somewhere in the world,” Sturges said. “It’s just the matter of trying to stay up with them.”
A few of the things Sturges would like to accomplish while being a Grizzly is to win another national championship and hopefully receive another Division 1 offer.
Sturges’ previous major was sports media and business but that is subject to change depending on his next school. He also has aspirations of going to the NFL and being successful.
