Compassionate tutors are worth seeking out

Tutoring services are a very useful asset to students who want to succeed in college. A tutor can help in more ways than just by assisting students with understanding their homework. Tutors can also help by making sure students stay confident in their academic skills over time and providing moral support. Since tutor ambassadors are students, they have a way to relate to the students who are getting tutored better than a teacher might be able to.

“The number one thing that makes tutoring great at Butler is the personal touch,” Academic Success Coach Cassandra Zeiner said. “Our tutors build relationships with tutees that last well after they’ve aced the class that they sought out help with.”

Seeking help with school assignments is most effective when students feel safe and welcomed to learn. From my experience, students are offered a judgment free environment outside of their classrooms in the math lab or tutoring lab, located on the bottom floor of the 1500 building, on the right side of the main entrance. I go to the math lab at least once or twice a week to get help with my intermediate algebra homework. I find that it’s typically pretty quiet and a great place to work on math problems, even if I am not stuck on a particular problem. I know that when I need a place to focus, it is great to go take a seat in the math lab because if I do get stuck, I know someone can come over and help me figure out any of my math problems.

I’ve had several encounters with tutors in the math lab. From my experience, they have all been very friendly while also showing me that they want to help me succeed in math.
Another thing that makes tutoring fantastic at Butler is the accessibility. Tutoring services are free, which makes it very convenient for lower income students who are not able to afford private tutoring.

For a lot of students, paying off college debt related to tuition and housing is already hard enough. By providing students with free extra homework help included with their tuition is a very attractive feature to Butler students.

Any topic, from biology to writing papers, there is a tutoring service for it all. The OWL, also known as the Online Writing Lab, is a way for students to submit their papers to an online tutor. The tutor can then go through their paper and give advice about how the paper can be improved. This is especially helpful for students who don’t know where to go for grammar and writing help.

Any tutoring subjects that students may need is available online if not in person, through NetTutor.

Teachers are also amazing resources at Butler. However, student tutors have an advantage by being in a similar place in life as the students being tutored.

All college students need a little help sometimes, whether it be with advice about personal issues or something academic. Butler does their best to meet student’s needs with their tutoring, and I believe they do a fantastic job.
