A rising star from El Dorado takes set at Butler Community College. Sophomore Sydney Scanlon, the starting setter for the Women’s Volleyball team and a top contender, plans on majoring in radiology after her two years at Butler, but is undecided on whether she will play after she leaves. She has currently led the team in assists with 702, according to Butlergrizzlies.com.

Being able to play in her hometown excites Scanlon to succeed at her full potential and accomplish her goals during the game. Scanlon thrives when her family and friends come to support her at games, and she is appreciative of it.

“The ability to play volleyball in my hometown has been very exciting for me,” Scanlon said. “The reason [I chose Butler] was the ability to stay home and attend a top community college in Kansas. The ability to live at home, complete my core classes and continue to play the game I love in front of my family and friends was the biggest influence for me attending Butler.”

Head Coach Lisa Lechtenberg has been fascinated with not only Scanlon’s talent as a setter, but the amount of solid work she has put into the off-season.

“Sydney leads by example in the weight room,” Lechtenberg said. “She had gained a lot of strength that has helped her on the court. Her strengths as a player would be her serve and the ability as a setter to evenly distribute the ball to her hitters.”

Scanlon portrays someone who is easy to get along with, not only with her teammates, but with other people around who she interacts with. Volleyball Manager Greta Lies explained that Scanlon is considerate and courteous during their interactions on and off the court.

“Off the court, Sydney is such a friendly girl,” Lies said. “She is very approachable and kind. She shines both on and off the court.”
Scanlon enjoys competing at Butler, especially in the Jayhawk Conference. The competitive nature it brings out can also give some of the stronger memories in the season.

“Playing at Butler the past two years has been a fulfilling experience for me,” Scanlon said. “The ability to compete in the tough Jayhawk Conference with all my teammates continues to be very rewarding. The bond between all of us I hope will carry on long after our playing days are over. These last two years are full of memories I will never forget.”
