Region VI Basketball Tourney in Dodge City

Within the past few years, the Region VI Basketball Tournament is held in either Park City or in the Metro – Wichita area at Koch Arena. This upcoming Region VI Tourney will be out in Dodge City in the Student Activities Center. They will hold the tourney there in 2020 and 2021. “There was a scheduling conflict,” Jayhawk Commissioner Carl Heinrich said. “There was a conflict with a high school wrestling tournament that was scheduled (at Hartman Arena) Dodge City stepped up and offered the opportunity.”

Mike Jeffers enters Hall of Fame Class of 2020

Mike Jeffers is the men’s basketball head coach at Johnson County, and is entering his 29th and final season. He has an outstanding record at 491 wins at Johnson, which makes him the all-time wins leader at Johnson County. In total, he has 575 wins in his career, winning two NJCAA National Championships, finished runner up, NJCAA Coach of the Year, and KABC and NABC Coach of the Year.

Rion Rhoades leaves Hutchinson

Rion Roades, the head coach for the Hutchinson Blue Dragons resigned on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2019, after coaching for the Blue Dragons for 13 seasons. He will continue his career at a D1 school as a linebackers coach for the Arkansas Razorbacks. He will join with Head Coach Sam Pitman, who used to coach for the Blue Dragons in 1992-93.

Rhoades is the 17th coach for the Blue Dragons in the program. His achievements with the Blue Dragons will not be forgotten as he led Hutchinson to its first No.1 ranking in school history.

He won eight Salt City Bowl Games, and he has a career total of 99-50 with the Blue Dragons. He also had one of his former player Cordarrelle Patterson, as the only player in Hutchinson to go into the first round of NFL Draft.

Garden City coach changes

The Garden City Broncbusters women’s basketball team dealt with coach changes before the start of the season to the middle of the season. The original head coach for Garden City was Charinee Mitchel. She coached for two seasons but resigned during the off season to take an assistant coach job at Lamar University. Garden City hired their new Head Coach Omega Tandy, which later, during winter break, resigned and took a job at MacMurry College as the assistant coach. The Broncbusters use an assistant coach Mike “Scoop” Harding Jr. from the men’s team, to be the new intern head coach for women’s basketball. Harding played at Butler for two years.

Tamara Nard named Women’s Basketball KJCCC Player of the Week

The Butler Grizzlies this season are in 1st place in the Jayhawk East with a 9-3 record. It’s with the help of the freshman from Chicago, Tamara Nard. She leads the team in points per game at 15.1 and is currently 5th in the Jayhawk Conference. She also leads the team in field goal percentage at 58.2% and is currently third in the Jayhawk Conference. Nard is the second Grizzly Player to earn KJCCC Player of the Week.

Xavier Atkins named KJCCC Indoor Track & Field Player of the Week

Xavier Atkins was in first place in the 60m Dash with a record time of 6.74 in Wichita State on Friday, Jan. 17. The time of 6.74 by Atkins earns himself as No. two in the 60m dash in the NJCAA.
