At Butler, students can partake in many different activities and groups; one of those activities are intramurals. Intramurals focus on a variety of sports that any student can play.

Two students, sophomores Gaby Guzman and Greta Lies, plan the events and advertise intramurals. Their overall goal is to get as many students involved as they possibly can and to give students something different and active to do.

“I love when the events happen,” Guzman said. “They are super fun and just seeing all the different people who get involved there and seeing how excited the winners get when we put their photos on our intramurals championship wall. They get really excited with that. The friendships I have made through intramurals too have been super good for me.”

Intramurals involve a variety of sports; it does not center around just one activity. Previously they have hosted flag football, ping pong, sand volleyball, softball, cornhole and are currently in their indoor volleyball season.

“I have always loved sports,” Lies said. “I played all through high school, and my freshman year I even participated in intramurals. So my sophomore year when I got involved in the Residence Life office, I expressed my interest in them to my supervisor, and we started doing [intramurals] together.”

Students do not need any background in sports or know how to play very well as it is all for fun. Though, for students who want to participate in sport centered activities but are not on a team, then intramurals is an easy way to get involved.

“Those who are not involved in sports or other activities can just have some fun on campus and get involved with student life,” Lies said.

Intramurals are also a good way to get to know other students at Butler and is a fun way to participate in student activities. They are mostly held once a week, so they are easy to attend.

“My favorite part about them is that no matter who you are, you can go to intramurals, and you can have a really good time with them,” Lies said. “I love just watching my peers who I see around, like sitting in the classroom, seeing them get up, be active and get involved. It is a good way to get to know them.”
