“I Got Rhythm,” ‘’I Got Music‘’ and “I Got My Friends” is the three part series the vocal music department has committed to this year. The vocal concerts on Thursday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. are the second part of the trilogy “I Got Music”.

“Our second home concert of this year is titled “I’ve Got Music!”” Associate Professor of Vocal Music Matthew Udland said. “It is part of a three-concert series that began in the fall with our first concert, “I’ve Got Rhythm.” We will end the school year with our final concert in May titled “I’ve Got My friends!” The three titles together are a nod to a pair of America’s greatest songwriters, George and Ira Gershwin, and their classic tune “I Got Rhythm.””
The vocal department picks a different theme each year that best fits every ensemble’s needs.

““I’ve Got Music!” is broad enough that nearly any style of song is appropriate; it allows us to be really broad and flexible in our programing to make sure there is something for everyone,” Udland said. “Our March show tends to be a more traditional performance for our Chamber and Concert Choir ensembles, so focusing on the “music” we make seemed like a good fit.”

Many vocal students have been preparing for this concert since the first of the school year. Many of the new songs were given in January, but some are only a month old.

“We have been working on two of the numbers since, like the very beginning,” freshman math major Zachary Roeder said. “So we have been working on those two for the last six, seven months. Then the first number we got two months ago, and our other numbers are like a month old. We have just been grinding those out everyday in class.”

As the days get closer, more hard work and time have to be put in by everyone.

“During the week, we already have Monday, Wednesday and Friday for concert choir, everyone is in concert choir for an hour three days a week,” Roeder said. “Headliners is three days two hours a week, so that is at least nine hours every week and that is not practicing outside of class when you need to learn new stuff and not adding extra rehearsals, she [Mack] will add in what we need, so show week will come in like six to 10, so an extra four hours each day.”

The tickets are free for everyone, but the vocal department encourages patrons to reserve their seats either at the Box Office open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. or at their website: http://www.butlercc.edu/boxoffice.
